What is the Political Courage Test?

Florida State Legislative Election 2018 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Yes b) Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
No c) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
While I am pro choice, I would support 24-hour waiting periods. We all wish abortions weren't part of life. Unfortunately, they are. Criminalizing them will not make them go away, it will only drive them underground, increasing risks to patients. We need to approach abortion as a public health problem and offer women support as opposed to a crime problem and punishing them.

1) Budget Stabilization:Indicate which proposals you support (if any) for balancing Florida's budget.

No a) Do you support the creation of a state income tax in Florida?
No b) Reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
No c) Instituting mandatory furloughs AND/OR layoffs for state employees?
No d) Reducing benefits for Medicaid recipients?
I support Medicaid expansion in Florida. Until we fix our broken health care system, we need to do our best to provide access to healthcare to the more disadvantaged parts of our population.
Yes a) Do you support any limits on campaign contributions to state candidates?
Yes b) Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Yes c) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
Yes d) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
I support government-issued ID to present at voting but if local officials are going to restrict access to attaining said ID, that is a big problem.
Yes a) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
Yes b) Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes?
No c) Should a minor accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
d) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
Yes e) Do you support prohibiting the use of handheld electronic devices while operating a motor vehicle?
If "d" means holding suspects to allow for coordination with ICE, I do not support it. While it may very well be supporting federal immigration law, the intended or unintended effect is heavy racial profiling by local police.
Yes a) Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes b) Do you support lowering state taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
c) Do you support reducing state government regulations on the private sector?
Yes d) Do you support expanding access to unemployment benefits?
No e) Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
Yes f) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of Florida?
"c" depends on what you're talking about. If you're talking about regulations of fossil fuel exploration or treating wastewater, then yes I support regulations. If you're regulating how much beer a local brewery has to sell before they can get on a distributor's truck, then no, I do not support that type of regulation.
Yes a) Do you support adopting federal education standards in Florida?
No b) Do you support state funding for charter schools?
Yes c) Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from Florida high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
Yes d) Do you support increasing funding for the state education budget?
Charter schools began as a supplement to traditional public schools. They were used as laboratories to test new technology or cater to special student populations. When the for-profit industry began to take over and compete directly with public schools for students, that's when they became a liability and not an asset.
Yes a) Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)?
Yes b) Do you support state government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
Yes c) Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
Yes d) Do you support increasing state funding for environmental restoration projects?
e) Other or expanded principles:
Yes a) Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
Yes b) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
No c) Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom?
Yes d) Should a license be required for gun ownership?
Rather than bans, I would institute a better licensing system. The more sophisticated the firearm, the higher level license one must attain. You're not driving a forklift or 18-wheeler with a Class E driver's license. You shouldn't own an AR-15 without proper training, background check and screening.
Yes a) Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
Yes b) Do you support Medicaid expansion through Florida's health care programs?
No c) Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
Yes d) Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
e) Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
"e" is a tough one. I would have to look at this on a case by case basis.
Yes a) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in Florida's anti-discrimination laws?
Yes b) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Florida's anti-discrimination laws?
Yes c) Do you support greater efforts by Florida state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
d) Other or expanded principles:
Conservation - the state legislature has robbed the Land Acquisition Trust Fund 3 of the last 4 years. With a 75% mandate and with no other issue being more of a race against the clock, this situation must be addressed post haste. Education - I would restore the 2.0 mils that is traditionally given to the public school districts in the state. Wages - I would raise the state minimum wage to $10/hr. leaving local governments the option to raise it above 10. I would also allow for a provision for small businesses to pay a lower wage.
